This was an especially fun storytime! I even integrated a special instrument:
Opening Song- I modified this song from Jbrary to say hello to each different kind of bird. This was also a nice tie in to the Vocabulary tip we were highlighting today. We talked about explaining new words you come across, like instead of just saying something is a bird, we’re learning about different types of birds.
Before we sing I always go over the ASL so I explained the signs for “Hello” “Friend” and “Time” before I sang it and then we sang it once again together:
It’s time to say hello”
Then we practiced the sign for “bird” and sang the song again many times, naming each different kind of bird.
So for example:
“Hello Blue Jay
Hello Blue Jay
Hello Blue Jay
It’s time to say hello!”
Great silly words in here!
Song: Six little ducks
We did a little dance with this song that the kids had fun with 🙂
The illustrations in this book are so pretty and there are lots of great birds for the kids to point out (like a seagull and an owl.)
Kookaburra sits on the old gum tree,
Merry merry king of the bush is he.
Laugh, Kookaburra, laugh, Kookaburra,
Gay your life must be!
Kookaburra sits in the old gum tree
Eating all the gumdrops he can see
Stop, Kookaburra, Stop, Kookaburra
Leave some there for me.
I let the kids choose between The Odd Egg and I’m not cute for our last book so, I didn’t end up reading this last one but it definitely is worth mentioning. It’s a great lift the flap book!
Closing Song: “Goodbye Friends” from Jbrary
It’s time to say, Goodbye!
Craft: I had prepared this for the pirate program but then didn’t end up using it since we had so many leftover pirate crafts in the storytime closet. It worked great for today though!
